Spot ownership versus derivative exposure
On a spot exchange, buying bitcoin means holding bitcoin: the asset sits in a wallet, custody is either yours or the exchange's, and the position has no financing cost or expiry. Through a derivative — a CFD, future or perpetual — you hold a contract whose value tracks the asset. There is no wallet, no on-chain transfer, and usually leverage plus an ongoing financing charge.

Why crypto markets behave differently
Continuous trading
There is no closing bell. A market that never closes never gaps in the traditional sense, but it also means adverse moves can develop while a trader sleeps. Overnight risk is not a metaphor in crypto; it is a structural feature.
Fragmented liquidity
Volume is spread across many venues rather than a single consolidated tape. Price differences between venues are usually small for major assets and can be much larger for smaller ones, which is why depth matters more than headline volume figures.
Reflexive sentiment
Narratives move faster than fundamentals. Protocol upgrades, regulatory statements, exchange incidents and social momentum can all reprice an asset sharply within hours, and correlations between assets tend to spike precisely when diversification would be most useful.
Instruments you will encounter
- Spot pairs — BTC/USD, ETH/USDT and similar, traded for immediate settlement.
- Perpetual contracts — derivatives with no expiry, kept near spot by a periodic funding payment between long and short holders.
- Dated futures — contracts expiring on a set date, often trading at a premium or discount to spot.
- Options — rights rather than obligations, priced heavily on implied volatility.
- CFDs — broker-offered contracts tracking crypto prices, common on multi-asset platforms.
Risks specific to digital assets
- Custody risk — lost keys or compromised venues can mean permanent loss with no recovery mechanism.
- Liquidity holes — order books can thin dramatically during stress, widening spreads and worsening fills.
- Regulatory change — access, taxation and product availability can shift quickly by jurisdiction.
- Funding drag — perpetual funding costs accumulate and can dominate returns on longer holds.
- Liquidation cascades — clustered leverage means forced closures amplify moves in both directions.
Evaluating where you would trade
For crypto specifically, the platform questions extend beyond the usual list. Are prices sourced from one venue or aggregated? Are funding rates disclosed and historical? What happens to positions during exchange outages or extreme moves? Is there a hard cap on leverage for digital assets, and does the platform explain liquidation mechanics in plain language?
A grounded starting point
- Learn the difference between owning an asset and holding a contract on it.
- Understand funding and financing before holding any leveraged position overnight.
- Size positions from volatility, not from conviction.
- Write down custody and platform assumptions explicitly — most crypto losses are structural, not directional.
